So, Marilyn says it has been two weeks since I made a post to this blog. And a quick check confirmed her claim. I guess I will try to say something halfway interesting.
Yesterday we visited three different sites around Nairobi. The first was the Kazuri bead factory, since we arrived there too late for a tour last week. It was interesting and impressive. Nearly 400 single parents are employed, creating the bracelets, necklaces, and earrings that have made Kazuri world famous. Here are a few photos:
Almost around the corner is arguably the most recognizable house in Nairobi. Time for a quiz question: Whose house is this? Hint: She was played by Meryl Streep in the movie.
If you missed the first question, here is an easier one: Name the movie that featured the life of the woman who lived here.
OK, how did you do? If your answer to the second question was "Out of Africa", you were correct! You get a C grade. If your answer to the first question was "Karen Blixen", you get the "A for the day".
The most interesting thing to me is that, after failing at growing coffee, even going bankrupt, Karen Blixen becomes a heroine in both Kenya and Denmark by writing a book about that failure. Go figure.
Our final stop for the day was at Kitengela Glass. This is best described as an "artist colony", where everything, from stepping stones to the buildings, is seen as an opportunity for artistic expression.
Unfortunately, as one leaves ANU to drive to Kitengela, you turn away from the city, so the paved road ends after only about 50 meters! Dirt and rocks, ruts and dust, are your constant companions. But at the end of 20 minutes, to travel less than 3 kilometers, we arrived. Here are a few more photos of the place.
We did not buy anything this trip, but will probably go back again and purchase an item or two.
Until next time, probably another two weeks.
