Saturday we made our first foray into the "wilds" of Africa! Actually, we drove (were driven) to the Sheldrick elephant orphanage. It is only about 4 miles from the ANU campus. Our first sighting of "wild" animals was as we entered the park.

The orphanage rescues baby elephants from places all around Kenya. The mothers may have died of natural causes or the result of poaching. They are kept here for up to two years then taken to a national park where they are cared for for up to 3 more years until an elephant "family" adopts them. Outside visitors are only allowed at one feeding each day.

| Here they come running! It's been three hours since the last feeding so they are starved! |
These guys are really hungry.
 |
| Chugging 10 liters of milk! This is the baby of the group, only 10 months old. |
The elephants range in age from less than 1 year to almost 3 years.

I tried a short video on my camera.
Finally, here is proof that we really are in Africa and did see the orphaned elephants! (Ignore the obvious photoshop)
