Our Retreat on the Kenyan Coast

Yesterday, Friday, we flew to Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast and went down the coast about 35 kilometers to the Leopard Beach Resort.

The times required for the various legs of the trip were strange.  It took nearly an hour to travel from ANU to the Kenyatta Airport, the main airport for Nairobi.  We then had to wait two hours until our flight was called.  Of course, if we had tried to shorten our wait, we would probably have needed two hours for the drive.  The total flight time was 45 minutes.  I would have taken a few pictures, but it was mostly cloudy, so there was not much to see.  I was hoping to see Mount Kilimanjaro in  the distance,  alas, that was not to be.  Maybe on the way home.  The final leg of the trip was a ride from the airport in Mombasa, through the city, and down the coast.  It should be sufficient to say that there wasn't anything photogenic along the way.

Our room is "sea-facing", meaning we can look out the patio doors and see the ocean.

Our first evening the dinner was served on the beach.  Usually, dinner is "semi-formal", slacks, shirt, dress, shoes, etc.  But on the  beach, more casual attire was allowed.

This morning, we had a buffet breakfast, about a thirty foot-long buffet!

We spent most of the morning on the beach, but very little in the water.  There are coral rocks scattered about and at high tide they are covered.

Lunch was at a pasta and pizza cafe just above the waterline.

And now this afternoon, I am writing this blog while Marilyn rests.  We did get a couple of wildlife photos:

And while walking back to our room before lunch, we encountered a couple of grounds workers retrieving coconuts.  We tried coconut milk (I think it must be an acquired taste).

Then one of the workers went up the tree to get more.

We will be back tomorrow with more of our adventures.
